How Biden Condemn The New Laws In Georgia on Voting Rights?

President Joe Biden called Georgia’s latest voting restrictions “outrageous,” “un-American,” and “Jim Crow in the Twenty-First Century.” In a tweet, Biden said, “This legislation, like so many others being enforced by Republicans in statehouses around the country, is a direct attack on the Constitution and good conscience.”

Biden expanded on his criticism when he left the White House for the weekend, calling the law an “atrocity” and slamming a clause that made it illegal to bring food or drink to voters in line.

“If you want any indication that it has nothing to do with fairness, nothing to do with decency, they pass a law saying you can’t provide water for people standing in line while they’re waiting to vote,” the president said. “You don’t need anything else to know that this is nothing but punitive, designed to keep people from voting. You can’t provide water for people about to vote. Give me a break.”

Biden’s comments came a day after Republican senators pushed through significant reforms to the state’s voting procedure, which Republican Gov. Brian Kemp quickly signed into law. The 98-page bill makes it illegal to provide food or drink to people standing in line to vote, increases voter ID requirements for mail voters, and shortens state runoff.

The legislation also allows the state legislature much greater power of election administration at the county level by enabling them to appoint the State Election Board’s chair, who could interfere and take over county election administration.

In a statement on Friday, Biden urged Congress to enact federal voter protections to avoid what he described as “Jim Crow in the Twenty-First Century.”

“It must end.” Biden said, “We have a moral and constitutional duty to act.”
