Police Officer Killed In Capitol Car Attack – How Did It Happen?

According to officials, Officer William Evans, an 18-year veteran of the Washington police force, died on Friday during an altercation with a motorist who rammed a barricade and lunged at officers with a knife.

“He started his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division’s First Responder’s Unit,” said Acting US Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman in a statement about Evans, also known as Billy. The death “devastates” Capitol Police, according to a separate release. Officer Brian Sicknick, 42, was killed in the Capitol riots on January 6, and the force was still recovering from the tragedy.

The details surrounding Evan’s death are still unknown.  Evans was one of two officers struck when the suspect’s blue Nissan Sentra crashed with a barricade.  According to law enforcement officials, the man exited the car with a knife and rushed at the officers.

Capitol Police said on Twitter that the second officer was “stable” and had non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said responding officers fatally shot the suspect, who was identified by multiple law enforcement agencies as Noah Green, 25, of Indiana.

Both officers were taken to the hospital right away after being struck by a driver.  Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that the FBI was supporting the Metropolitan police investigation into the reason for the attack.

President Joe Biden said in a tweet on Friday that he wanted to share “the nation’s gratitude” to the Capitol police.

“Jill and I were heartbroken to learn of the deadly assault at a security checkpoint on the grounds of the United States Capitol, which killed Officer William Evans and left a fellow officer battling for his life,” President said.
