Famine Risk in 20 Hunger Hotspots – According to UN Agencies, How Urgent Action Can Save People From Starvation?

According to a study released by two UN organizations, millions of people in 20 countries face famine. The report calls for immediate actions to avoid increasing hunger caused by factors such as violence, extreme weather, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme’s Hunger Hotspots Study mentioned that Yemen, South Sudan, and northern Nigeria are at the top of the list. While most of the countries affected are in Africa, the study indicates that hunger is likely to increase sharply in most parts of the globe.

According to the agencies, more than 34 million people worldwide are now suffering from emergency levels of extreme hunger, meaning they are on the brink of starvation.

“We are witnessing a disaster unfold right before our eyes. Famine is banging on the door for millions of families, driven by conflict, fueled by climate shocks and the COVID-19 hunger pandemic,” said David Beasley, WFP Executive Director.

“To prevent millions from dying of starvation, we desperately need three things: the war must end, we must be given access to poor areas to provide life-saving aid, and, most importantly, donors must step up with the US $5.5 billion we are appealing for this year,” he added.

According to an appeal launched earlier this month by the two UN organizations, the funds will be used for humanitarian food relief, cash, and emergency livelihoods interventions.
