How Is UN Security Council Demanding Covid-19 Vaccine Ceasefire?
On Friday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution asking all Member States to adopt a “sustained humanitarian pause” in local conflicts to prepare for COVID-19 vaccinations. World Health Organization (WHO) president TedrosAdhanomGhebreyesus, addressing journalists later, argued that more could be accomplished.
While praising the landmark resolution and stressing the value of vaccine equity, he recommended that “concrete steps” be taken to waive intellectual property rights in order to improve vaccine development and “get rid of this virus as quickly as we can.”
‘The virus has taken the whole earth hostage,’ said Tedros. If there is political will, the UN Security Council can do it.’
The Council resolution calls for a review of specific cases posed by the United Nations where access to vaccines is being disrupted and to consider what further steps might be required to ensure that all impediments are lifted, and hostilities are halted.
The resolution also asked for contributions to low- and middle-income nations and other countries in need of vaccinations from wealthy developing nations, including through the COVAX Facility, the innovative WHO initiative to procure and distribute coronavirus vaccines to the world’s most indigent population.
