What Are The Details of Covid Relief Bill Passed By the House?

Just days after the United States reached the devastating mark of 500,000 deaths, the House voted early Saturday to pass President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief package, a step toward fulfilling his vision for getting the pandemic under control.

The bill, which provides $1,400 cash grants, a $400 weekly federal unemployment benefit, a per-child grant of up to $3,600 for one year, and billions of dollars to administer coronavirus vaccines and assist education and local communities, was approved by the Democratic-controlled House by a vote of 219 to 212.

With all Republicans voting against the bill and only two Democrats joining them, Jared Golden of Maine and Kurt Schrader of Oregon, the vote split mainly on partisan lines.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where it is likely to remove a clause to increase the minimum wage. However, since Democrats are using a mechanism that does not need Republican support, the remainder of the package is expected to pass.

In a brief address Saturday morning, Biden thanked the House and encouraged the Senate to act swiftly to approve the bill and return it to his desk. “We can’t afford to lose time,” Biden said. “For too long, the people of this country have suffered way too much. The misery must be alleviated, and the American Rescue Plan does exactly that.”

The $1,400 checks would be given to people earning up to $75,000 a year or married people making $150,000, and the amount would gradually decrease for those making most, zeroing out for people at $100,000 and for couples at $200,000.
